Mission, History and Objectives

Mission

Our mission is to motivate high-risk adolescents by mentoring them through the process of developing a partnership with a wild brumby horse. The skills that will naturally develop during this long term program will help equip the youths with the ability to become willing participants in society. Kalandan Foundation empowers participants, prepares them for success in life and helps them make positive choices all while training and gaining the trust and respect of wild horses and the people around them.

A unique characteristic of the Foundation is that we run exactly the same program for business and civic leaders. When such individuals are removed from their corporate environment they experience the challenges, struggles and triumphs of the Brumby Camp Program in much the same way as the youth. Our subsequent mission is to utilize this facet of our program as a catalyst for corporate awareness and capital development.

History

The founder, Greg Powell, was a catalyst for the success of the Brumbies Program, a Service Learning program through Youth Off The Streets (YOTS). Along with Powell Entertainment and his personal friend, Jack Thompson, Greg launched the Network 9 television program, Wild Kids Wild Horses. This followed the successful documentary, The Horse Handler: Wild Horses of the Tinderry Ranges, which documented the rescue of a herd of brumbies that were at risk of being culled. Greg continues to direct the Brumby Camp Program while providing general direction of the foundation with the objective of becoming the benchmark program for working with high-risk youth through Greg’s style of horsemanship.

Greg Powell has developed an association and refined techniques that are necessary for program growth. His relationship with YOTS has lasted 6 years. Many at risk youth (>100) have participated in the Brumby Camp Program resulting in many stories of transformed lives. Greg is currently developing a strong partnership with Mission Australia which has expressed interest in utilizing the Brumby Camp Program on a regular basis. The demand for the program is very high and growing, ensuring that the Kalandan Foundation has a secure future partnering with some of Australia’s premier charitable organizations.

Objectives & Activities

Kalandan Foundation's initial objectives are to complete a detailed 4-month study and planning period with Mission Australia.

The planning period will cover all aspects of involvement with Mission Australia and will offer an assessment and analysis of the current program run by The Kalandan Foundation. The Kalandan Foundation is looking forward to developing the Brumby Camp model with Mission Australia and realizing it's fullest potential.
