Message from the Founder/CEO

My name is Greg Powell and I have spent many years developing a charity concept based on the horsemanship skills I have used over the years as a professional in the horse industry. I would like to share with you some of the ups and downs of this journey having culminated in a fully endorsed DGR Public Benevolent Institution that I have called "The Kalandan Foundation".

The name of the Foundation came from the name of the property that my family has owned for 25 years "Kalandan". The name consists of letters from both my parents' names with "land" in the middle. This property has always been close to my heart and was the place where I grew as a horseman and matured into an adult. The property is north east of Cooma in the Snowy Mountains and is 1,000 acres of pristine mountain country bordered by the Bredbo River.

I have run programs for troubled youth at Kalandan since 2003 and have seen remarkable results from the camps. Bringing together wild horses from our National Parks and troubled youth from some of Australia's biggest cities has been the inspiration for me to develop my own charitable organization that can grow and develop this concept to it's fullest potential.

I purchased the property in 2005 not long before my father passed away. I promised my father that I would carry on the work I had undertaken of which he strongly approved. I have ultimate respect and admiration for my father and mother and they have been integral in the development of the foundation.

My parents always wanted the property used to help troubled youth and it is a great privilege that I am able to continue developing this work in honour of my mother and also in my father's memory.
